Fit For Marriage
A weekly Fit For Marriage message from Russell Yates, a man with a compelling message— straight from the Bible—that challenges the disintegration of the Christian family.

Doing The Right Thing

How important is marriage? I contend that it is the foundation for everything pertaining to life and Faith. If wholesome Christian families were the rule instead of the exception, it would solve a multitude of problems.

Many people think the answer to the “marriage disaster,” is that couples should not divorce … and that is true. But the problem goes far deeper.

I want to offer an uncomplicated solution that would actually work if people would set aside their preconceived notions and look at things objectively.

Most people think of government as something on the local, state, or national level. But government actually starts in the home, and we're in trouble because of faulty home government.

On November 2 we'll go to the polls and choose the man who will serve as president for the next four years. We'll also select governors, senators, congressmen, and a host of other public servants.

Voting is a democratic process by which we choose people to represent us. Once in office, our representatives make decisions on our behalf. As citizens we write, call, or email our representatives so that we might influence the decisions they make. America is a republic.

If we had a true democracy, everyone would have an equal say on every decision. Can you imagine the entire populace trying to democratically supervise something as complex as a major war? Most of us wouldn't have a clue.

So why do two of three marriages split? Because we've refused representative government for our families. True democracy doesn't work—not in civil government—not in family government. When Harry Truman said, “The buck stops here,” he was accepting his responsibility as the ultimate decision maker for the United States.

The idea of representative government came from the Bible. In Genesis 3:16 God tells the woman that her husband would rule over her. It's no shame to be ruled over by a president, governor, or mayor. And there's nothing wrong with a husband ruling over his wife. It's entirely biblical and it's entirely right.

An overseer [husband], then, must be above reproach … one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity. 1 Timothy 3:2,4, NAS

When a godly woman marries a man, she accepts him as the representative who will make decisions on behalf of the family. As in civil government, it is her rightful place to influence her husband and help him, so he can make good decisions.

Wives influence, husbands decide—that's God's pattern for family government.

If our civil government were run like present-day family government, it would crater just like our marriages have. Doing the right thing for marriage is to restore representative government—with the husband as head of the house. (The idea is so simple I wonder why someone—other than the apostles—hadn't thought of it sooner.)

My wife and I can testify that God's plan for marriage works. We have a unique testimony and a persuasive word.
